St. Francisville, LA

Next we headed north of Baton Rouge along the Mississippi River where several Southern plantations were located. The first we visited was the $10m restored antebellum (pre-war) Southern plantation called Rosedown. There were a separate kitchen, doctor's office, milk barn (where perishables were stored), and an old barn.

We took our time, spending more than 1-1/2 hours going through the mansion, beautiful gardens and out-buildings. Before the civil war, more than 450 slaves worked the fields here. After abolition and their freedom, more than 250 of them stayed-on as share croppers, a testimony to their decent treatment, I suppose.

After Rosedown plantation, we headed for The Myrtles plantation. Since it was late afternoon, and we had an hour-plus drive back, we opted to drive around the estate and take a few pictures ... no tour. If we had, I'm sure my feet would have been yelling, "I don't know nothin' 'bout birthin' no babies!" (Gone With the Wind?)
