Baton Rouge-1

Today was another big day of sights and adventure, almost too much to Blog. We headed East to Baton Rouge to visit the first Southern Plantation on our list, Magnolia Mound (circa 1791). Unfortunately, the heavy rains and flooding the day before caused some staff not able to get to work the mansion tours, so the gates were closed. A couple pix of the front:

So, the next stop was the Capital Park Museum. There was a big bus parked out front and people coming out of the museum with badges on (stinking badges), so I walked up to find a note on the door that said "closed for private event".

I saw a city employee just inside the door and thought to ask him the museum was open to the public today. Not! However, he thought a minute and told me that if we wanted to self-guide, we could stay in the museum until he made a tour to make sure all the bus tour was clear, then pick us up and escort us out.

So, I scrambled out to the car to get Louise and we went back in for an exclusive, self-guided tour that lasted about a 1/2 hour until "Carl" caught up with us. Then he gave us an exclusive tour of the music display. OMG! Carl was a super guy and would't take any money ... just wanted to do a good thing for a couple wayward visitors from California. Many diaramas and really cool stuff to see here! We couldn't have asked for a better time at the museum... for free! A few pix here, starting with a Confederate submarine:

I'm going to break here and post the next two stops in another blog, so this one doesn't get too long.
