Our last day in San Antonio, we decided to make a try for the remainder of the venues we had on our list ... We made all but two, and still had a great time visiting the Botanical Gardens, The Witte Museum, and the San Antonio Zoo, in that order.
We didn't get to the Buckhorn Saloon and Museum, or the Texas Ranger history museum. Next time?
Leaving the RV about 8:30am we headed for the Botanical Gardens, which opened at 9am. Established in 1980, the gardens cover 38 acres. I need not say it, but we walked and walked! The grounds were well kept; however, a few of the inside exhibits were like greenery run amok! There was just so many different species, all merged together, it was a little hard to make sense of the displays. I'm sure Tarzan would have felt right at home.
Next stop, the Witte Museum (pronounced wit-ee). This was a fantastic experience with 3 floors and an outside area full of natural history, dinosaur bones found in Texas, and diorama scenes with 3-dimensional figures showing life a 1000 years ago.
The museum was huge and I'm sure we didn't cover every nook and cranny. However, we managed to capture the essence of each display and spend time reading the text for each exhibit. A few pix follow:
Lots of cowboy heritage here ... and I took a lot of pictures for Louise to scrapbook someday.
Finally, while are legs held out, we decided to head for the Zoo. All 3 venues were close together, so no time lost getting between them, and parking was plentiful and free. The Zoo was only open for 2 hours today due to special events, so we concentrated on those areas where we could find large animals outside. Many were sleeping after a big lunch of slow tourist, I imagine, so there wasn't a lot to see. A few pix of lions, tigers and bears follow (oh my?):
