Washington State to Vancouver Island

As I write this, the tour of Vancouver Island, Butchart Gardens, and the whole memorable experience of getting there (and back) by ferry, is now behind us and we are headed down the Oregon coast. There has just been too much to do each day, things to see and places to go ... for me to spend time at the keyboard. However, I'll post a few comments and pictures here to catch you up and, at some point when I can upload it, a link to folders of the many pictures I'm putting together on Amazon Photos.

Meanwhile, the trip from Spokane to Ellensburg was over the worse pavement I think we have ever navigated. There were holes that would swallow a motorcycle! In fact, the state of Washington has made the decision to put up signs to warn travelers of these obstacles rather than fix them! They read, "Motorcycles should use extreme caution" ... Yes, "extreme", is the word being used on these signs. As for the rest of us, well ... I guess they expect us to just steer around them ... on a 2-lane road ... with oncoming traffic ... and no run-off. Taxpayer monies must be going to something more important, I guess. Geeeeez!

Anyway, the stay in Ellensburg was a quick overnight, and we were off early towards the Olympic Peninsula KOA. We planned a 4-day stay here while we toured Vancouver Island. This park is still "emerging" as a KOA, but it was quiet and close to Port Angeles where we planned to catch a 7:30am ferry.

Roads in the park were tight, dusty and bumpy. But, our campsite was clean, level and spacious, and the camp host was helpful with suggestions of things to do in the area. After setting up camp, we drove the short distance into Port Angeles to scope-out the ferry boarding area for our early-morning departure.

There just happened to be a restaurant overlooking the port that called us to an afternoon lunch of seafood linguine, fresh salmon, and shrimp cocktails, of course. Excellent food and service!

Soooo yummy! The view of the bay from our table, in the virtually deserted dining room, was spectacular as are most of the views towards the sea in this area.

After lunch, we walked to the end of one of the piers, and to the top of a lookout tower built to allow you to see further out into the islands ... very cool! There were sculptures by local artists as well as pictures of history in the area.

How about a can of salmon? Anyone? We have plenty!

So, after walking off some of that linguine and salmon, it was time to head back to the RV and get rested up for the trip to Vancouver Island, BC. This was to be a totally new experience for us ... getting to the ferry, getting the car on the ferry, getting through customs, the probable strip search for weapons! Yikes! Well, I'll get that up on the next blog ... Yes, always more to come on this adventure! Stay tuned!
