San Diego in June

San Diego in June turned out to be one of the best places to visit in California in Summer. The coast offers a cooling overcast in the morning, sunny days with temperatures that never go above 72 degrees during the day, then cool evenings as the overcast rolls back in. We were able to walk along park trails overlooking the bay, and witness others riding bikes, hiking, kayaking in the bay, and to take in all the incredible scenery of the bay.

USS Midway CVA-41
The first weekend of June also just happens to be Museum Ships Day, a worldwide event where amateur radio operators in every city where a WWII ship may be moored, show up to operate the on-board radio station.

The object is to make as many contacts as possible during the 2-day event. Of course, since I am one of those so-called "hams", I had to try and get aboard the ship. I contacted local ham radio clubs in the area by email until I found the one responsible for the event aboard USS Midway CV-41, moored just 20 minutes south of Mission Bay.

Soon, I received an email back from the USS Midway radio team volunteers, who assigned me an operating slot of 2-hours on day-1, from 10am to Noon. I had done this event once before aboard the USS Hornet in Alameda, so was really looking forward to the event.

This is a giant ship with a lot of history, and I'll provide a link at the bottom for you to read more about that. In any case, here are a few pix of me aboard, and operating a temporary radio station setup in a room just below the flight deck. I made 42 contacts during my session, nearly half of those made during the entire weekend on my assigned frequency band. Great fun!

Well, there is so much more to post from our 6-week trip, so I'll move along. I'll put up another pix showing the callsign, then post a link to the ship's history.

And, one more classic photo to wrap up this post:

As always, stay tuned as there is much more to come ...
